My most recent body of work, entitled Pretty in Lace, bends the boundaries of gender roles as it juxtaposes them in clothing and sculptural forms. By replacing certain embellishments of masculine clothing, accessories, and objects with lace fabric, I engage in a direct deconstruction of masculinity, imbuing it with a representation of the feminine as part of a greater effort to question the logic of gender designation.
Based in a direct relevance to me and my daily gendered presentation and experience, my work continues to delve into and problematize queerness and race. Fabric and found objects remain the media I use in my art; I alter and recreate gendered objects and clothing, placing them onto my own body for others to interpret and reinterpret. I persist in challenging my audience to question gender while reshaping the gaze through which I am viewed.
